Landscaping of BMP

Landscaping around the large BMP (Lake) behind Walt Whitman Ave began on 12/22/07.  The first phase consisted of planting of 150 Nellie Stevens Hollies and 285 Nandinas to soften the view of the fence along the east side of the BMP.  These plants will eventually block the fence and some of the apartments from view.  Many thanks to:

  • The 10 residents who volunteered a Saturday and some satisfying hard work to help with the planting (
  • Port Warwick resident Jeff Knight (KnightScapes Inc. - Outdoor Lighting and Water Features Contractor) for obtaining the plants for the Conservancy at a significantly reduced rate
  • Lawn Ventures (Topsoil and Mulch) who loaned the use of their Bobcat Loader
  • Jimmy Huff (Owner of Southeastern Landscaping the Conservancy Landscape Contractor) who loaned the use of their Gator for hauling plants, soil, and mulch and donated his time for the whole day
  • Susan Smith of UPA and Mike Roberson of William E Wood who donated their time and trucks for hauling rental equipment

The second phase, planned for early March, will consist of filling in the eroded areas of the banks and seeding of the entire area surrounding the BMP with Dutch White Clover.  A third phase will consist of various plantings along the west side of the BMP.  Other areas in the plan for eventual landscaping are along the alleys behind Emily Dickinson, Herman Melville, and around the small BMP behind the William E Wood and Turner Buildings.  These projects will be executed as discretionary funds permit.

Irrigation System

The Board of Directors authorized a contract with Bec-Mar Outdoor Lighting and Irrigation Inc. to perform a complete overhaul of the irrigation system in Port Warwick.  An initial investigation revealed the pumps to be in good working order and providing sufficient pressure and volume to run the system.  Check valves and rain sensors will be installed on each controller.  The next step is a zone by zone analysis.  Each zone (approx 145) will be checked for proper operation.  Valves, heads, lines etc. will be cleaned, repaired, replaced, and adjusted as necessary for proper operation and coverage.   A report of design deficiencies as well as a proposal for annual maintenance will be provided as part of the contract.  Work is to begin the week of February 11th and is expected to take 4 to 5 weeks.
